there is a burgeoning movement in the food world to outsmart the old “leftovers”
system, which can be pretty fun once you get into the spirit. For instance, you
can see what <span style="color: lime;"><a href="http://joanvoight.blogspot.com/2017/09/dont-call-it-food-or-beer-waste-call-it.html">I posted</a></span> earlier about beer made with old bread<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">.</span> </span></span></div>

meals for the city’s refugees and homeless. Along with 60 of his closest chef-friends,
he started a soup kitchen in the poorest part of the city, designed to use the
salvaged Fair food in tasty new dishes. That spawned a collection of similar community
kitchens, called <b><span style="font-weight: normal;">Refettorios,</span></b>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%; font-size: 12pt;">On
the Ikea front, it turns out that A LOT of Ikea shoppers like the iconic
Swedish meatballs at the in-store cafes more than they give a hoot about the
white furniture. As a result, there’s a chance we’ll see Ikea restaurants in
the near future. Don’t laugh, the company already tried out some pop-up
restaurants in London, Paris and Oslo. </span></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: #444444;"><span style="background: white none repeat scroll 0% 0%; font-size: 12pt;">Ikea
sold $1.8 billion in food in 2016, (compared to about $36 billion in total
sales.) And almost a third of the people who eat there, including me and my
Mom, ignor the furniture and traipse through the maze of aisles just to get the
café for a fun meal. As a result, stand-alone Ikea cafes are
officially on the drawing board.</span></span></span></div>

with the regular beef meatballs, they added chicken and vegan versions, which
boosted meatball sales 30%. My fave are chicken balls: I’ve shared my somewhat
Swedish recipe below. </span></span></span></div>

cultivating spinach, lettuce and sprouts in an idle factory in Japan this year.

it costs about the same to grow food in high-tech factories as on a farm, with

Turkish fellow who taught America what decent (Greek) yogurt is all about. Its
chief marketing officer Peter McGuinness bristles with disdain toward the giant
food companies we know so well, like General Mills and Nabisco. His point: food-making
shortcuts are BS. Healthy should be affordable, and affordable food should be
healthier. Indie startups, he believes, can lead the way. </span></span></span></div>

ingredients and preservatives that were introduced in the 1940s to preserve
food for soldiers. But now, that is the lazy and cheap way to make food, and is
totally unnecessary. To do without [those additives] you have to clean the
factory more often. And if we can do it, with less of a budget than the big

By taking equity, they are preying on entrepreneurs.”</span></span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "times";"> </span><br /><span style="font-family: "times";"> </span></span><br /><span style="font-family: "times";"><span style="color: yellow;"><span style="font-size: large;">* <span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;"> </span></span></span><span style="font-family: Verdana,sans-serif;">“Keep in mind, the big traditional food companies

I think the storms have passed in your town, and everything is growing so fast it takes your breath away. Right?<br />
<br />
Welp, that's the way it is here too.<br />
So my thoughts have turned to flowering trees (the orange blossoms are amazing) and what to put in the garden beds.<br />
Beyond the obvious tomatoes, I've been fascinated this year by greens and herbs, especially the ones that are expensive or rare in the market. In years past I've tried nurturing arugula, my favorite bitter green, to no avail, just wasted space and water. But in the meantime, my experimental French sorrel, the tangy green you can never find, well, it's been taking off. It grows in big bunches yearound and loves to be trimmed back.<br />
So this year I've taken the hint from Mother Nature. I've given my hardy sorrel more space and gathered up recipes for Springtime sorrel dishes, beyond simple salads.<br />
<br />
(And the same philosophy applies to my herbs. Are they expensive, aromatic and tough little suckers? Then are in. Tarragon is on the list. Thai basil is too. I'm on the lookout for more; suggestions welcome.)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhlJ_zSicxGRdjqhomb3LgOezU6bcNg4G9k1KAirgbJr1Yu2k8rDzbxmS_aP6utEgR9XAcem16F6Cos3LwMC6QCYzYN2_Iotqf0QbmwRV_k5iyBxvgFEnxH5C6Y0Yokvdkca0xX5bLFEs/s1600/Herbs+pix.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhlJ_zSicxGRdjqhomb3LgOezU6bcNg4G9k1KAirgbJr1Yu2k8rDzbxmS_aP6utEgR9XAcem16F6Cos3LwMC6QCYzYN2_Iotqf0QbmwRV_k5iyBxvgFEnxH5C6Y0Yokvdkca0xX5bLFEs/s1600/Herbs+pix.jpg" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So this spring I recommend you look for sorrel seeds or seedlings at the organic herb rack of the nursery. You won't regret it.<br />
Here's a traditional French Sorrel soup from a French cook Eve Hill-Agnus.<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="-webkit-border-horizontal-spacing: 2px; -webkit-border-vertical-spacing: 2px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">You can read about Eve's love affair with sorrel <a href="http://www.ediblecommunities.com/dallasfortworth/spring-2013/french-sorrel-soup-de-ma-grand-mere.htm">here</a>.</span><br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyIAwCt1D7JhNRYrhSnNuNrxBxiOFqsHQuuR24518qb3Vij5MF6_SAqcEWn-iV-cVEk5_hlUmk6P6qOE9TOydlhHuZANlBqp259ESgyI2GDBlEG-GyfvVjJIwJ3bzizlTnvaDcflfE2Zo/s1600/redCocktail.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyIAwCt1D7JhNRYrhSnNuNrxBxiOFqsHQuuR24518qb3Vij5MF6_SAqcEWn-iV-cVEk5_hlUmk6P6qOE9TOydlhHuZANlBqp259ESgyI2GDBlEG-GyfvVjJIwJ3bzizlTnvaDcflfE2Zo/s1600/redCocktail.jpg" height="159" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">You don't have to believe me about Vermouth, just ask Ernest Hemingway. A friend recently gave me a book about Hemingway's writing and cocktail recipes, "</span><a href="http://www.amazon.com/To-Have-Another-Hemingway-Companion/dp/0399537643"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">To Have and Have Another</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">" by Philip Greene, and between all the reverence for Champagne (his Paris era) and rum coconut drinks (his Florida era), something else caught my eye. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">It was the way the American legend used vermouth, both sweet and dry. </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 24px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Native to Italy and France, vermouth is wine that has been mixed with herbs and other botanicals and fortified with unaged brandy. It seems to have all my favorite liquid elements. Papa Hemingway concocted a drink with both types of vermouth and a dash of bitters (another of my favorite cocktail components.)</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 24px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">So it's like a meal with side dishes, but not the meat. </span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 24px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 24px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Anyway, it's something you can make at home or get in any bar -- if there is no yummy local wine or microbrew around. Or any time you want something different and pretty, that isn't a martini. </span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 24px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 24px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">In going along with the no-meat theme, it's particularly nice to sip before enjoying a hearty vegetable and barley soup with warm, crusty bread. </span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="line-height: 24px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">So if the mood ever hits you, give it a try and have a healthy evening --- in literary style.</span></span><br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVBumuLu-hVNuhBx6IHx16oHLyYCOalGMgsSaBrJpySvAjGlhjknuapevwPWEwnYtsG_hfWSPjTpHs3PuTSK5L2V2gl6c5ZTo2S0dxispI1Ywcr7a5GpRGDX7jZAn0GPD3MwDsN6xwc8o/s1600/PumpkinBeerPumpkin1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVBumuLu-hVNuhBx6IHx16oHLyYCOalGMgsSaBrJpySvAjGlhjknuapevwPWEwnYtsG_hfWSPjTpHs3PuTSK5L2V2gl6c5ZTo2S0dxispI1Ywcr7a5GpRGDX7jZAn0GPD3MwDsN6xwc8o/s320/PumpkinBeerPumpkin1.jpg" width="267" /></a></div>
<br />
What is up with all the pumpkin excitement this year? Coffee drinks, soup, pancakes, beer, store windows, house decorations spilling from the porch to the walkways....pumpkins of all sizes and strains are everywhere.<br />
<br />
I think it is just great.<br />
<br />
To get in the spirit I made a pumpkin coffee cake for Halloween night with extra ginger. Yummy.<br />
A few days later, stuck in a raucous airport terminal (JFK, you're better, but why so much fast food and noise?) we calmed ourselves with pumpkin frozen yogurt topped with dark chocolate chips.<br />
Yeah, and my decorations for Thanksgiving are tiny pumpkins.<br />
<br />
All that bright orange pumpkin is happily healthy. It's loaded with the minerals and the antioxidant, beta-carotene, which helps our busy bodies fight cancer, heart problems and helps us feel younger than our years. Not too shabby.<br />
<br />
<br />
So, the burning question is: what types of <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #ffd966;">wine</span> go with pumpkin?<br />
Welp, if the pumpkin is savory with herbs like sage, thyme and onions, a light <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #ffd966;">Pinot Noir</span> is nice.<br />
If it is in a creamy soup, try a <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #ffd966;">Sauvignon Blanc</span>.<br />
And if it is sweet -- in a pie or (yes) bread pudding, you can go with a <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #ffd966;">Sauterne</span> or a delicate <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #f1c232;">Champagne</span>. Or just try a pumpkin beer, if you must.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixQY7YRvtxHyydKYS18BNVcGyTSauCAIlQm73TCPhZMoXSmCdgWSfigZDFVVlnwsrAvx6acNZlfQldTHoW-ZnD5yWyh25OMk6Cp1XTBMspjO4h3R4z5IGB5eM5PIiS8EgaCHH5AWOFiaw/s1600/pumpkin-butter.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="246" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixQY7YRvtxHyydKYS18BNVcGyTSauCAIlQm73TCPhZMoXSmCdgWSfigZDFVVlnwsrAvx6acNZlfQldTHoW-ZnD5yWyh25OMk6Cp1XTBMspjO4h3R4z5IGB5eM5PIiS8EgaCHH5AWOFiaw/s320/pumpkin-butter.jpg" width="320" /></a>The thing is pumpkin fever will pass after a month or so, and then what are we going to do? That's why I make and store pumpkin butter, with lots of sweet spices. Excellent on crusty toast or Greek yogurt, with a big mug of cinnamon tea. Who cares if it's raining outside.<br />
<br />
<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #e69138;">Easy Pumpkin Butter</span></b><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #e69138;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #e69138;">4 cups pumpkin puree</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #e69138;">1 cup honey or maple syrup</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #e69138;">1/2 cup apple juice</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #e69138;">2 tsp. ground ginger </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #e69138;">1 tsp each -- cinnamon, nutmeg</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #e69138;">1/2 tsp. cloves</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #e69138;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #e69138;">Combine everything in a crockpot, cook on medium-low for about 6 hours, with the lid slightly askew to let the steam out.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #e69138;">Afterwards, store in the fridge. </span><br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7KUAd6Hte8zxj8uQD8f3MWRs9LgWUSmfo_6OYt8qXwjgzBhANDsTllDR1eBjnYCa9s-3l1-1nTkKGZiTcqVy-wEk3_M3zCmWWKwIU02h_LVcGUHYJY9SKncxoSSyhOfBHcNdv9-HiVeQ/s1600/fitbit-image.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7KUAd6Hte8zxj8uQD8f3MWRs9LgWUSmfo_6OYt8qXwjgzBhANDsTllDR1eBjnYCa9s-3l1-1nTkKGZiTcqVy-wEk3_M3zCmWWKwIU02h_LVcGUHYJY9SKncxoSSyhOfBHcNdv9-HiVeQ/s320/fitbit-image.jpg" width="320" /></span></a></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">A very bright friend of mine turned her health and body shape around, thanks to the little electronic bracelet she wears on her wrist. She started with a Jawbone Up, then switched to a Fitbit wristband and she seems hooked. ( She also looks ten years younger.)</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Another friend just bought a similar gadget six weeks ago, and programmed in that she wanted to lose a pound a week....and she has lost exactly six pounds.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">The gizmos, along with a smartphone, keep track of how much you move, how well you sleep, and how many calories you are eating. When you are not doing well, it tells you and it tracks how you are doing through the day. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">It turns out that monitoring our daily habits via a machine is a big boon to our health. Surprises the heck out of me. But think of it, we are busy enough keeping track of everything else -- and this takes the guesswork out of staying fit. Plus both friends tell me how fun it is. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #f9cb9c;">Anyway, that's what big drug companies and healthcare facilities are also finding out. Daily planners, trackers and monitors are unexpectedly popular for the healthy as well as those with chronic problems.</span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #f9cb9c;">My</span></span><a href="http://www.adweek.com/news/advertising-branding/welcome-new-face-big-pharma-marketing-152767"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #f9cb9c;"> </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;">story</span></span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #f9cb9c;"> "Welcome to the New Face of Big Pharma," about how drugmakers are dealing with Obamacare, was eye-opening, and gives a taste of what's to come. I'm guessing that the trendy Fitbit is just the tip of the iceberg. </span></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #f9cb9c;">See what you think. </span></span><a href="http://www.adweek.com/news/advertising-branding/welcome-new-face-big-pharma-marketing-152767"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;">Click here</span></span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;">.</span></span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">When I say "connecting the dots", I actually mean the dot coms. In other words, I'm getting fascinated about how sharing is connected to our online lives. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Thanks to Twitter, Facebook, email and our various gadgets, it is getting so much easier to buy, sell, rent and share our stuff like houses, cars, tools, clothes, and the garden harvest. The fun part is looking at the examples.</span><br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPgN0O2jm8U7oB5i2Rb_zXEIMXvL_NHFhdxg2GisVqCMqCmapbS4IFyxtQj2ASZe_hNKdIsU3FKuucD6wT6kpN-8M0gvNgXh6wAaocy-Or1aTCRb8bZqqQzqn96hVf-mCPMpAz3VizyIw/s1600/dancing-fest-20120822-001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPgN0O2jm8U7oB5i2Rb_zXEIMXvL_NHFhdxg2GisVqCMqCmapbS4IFyxtQj2ASZe_hNKdIsU3FKuucD6wT6kpN-8M0gvNgXh6wAaocy-Or1aTCRb8bZqqQzqn96hVf-mCPMpAz3VizyIw/s320/dancing-fest-20120822-001.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
My back has been killing me lately.<br />
Yeah, I know--lots of sitting during the week, plenty of walking in the cool evenings, but not enough attention to stretching, bending and standing up really straight. Many friends who are starting their gardens, spending hours crouching, are also complaining. Sore aching backs abound this time of the year.<br />
It's time to think like dancers!<br />
Here's how. Crank up the music (my favorites are jazz and salsa) and loosen up all your parts. Smile and stretch -- long and straight. Pretend you are the sleekest, snazziest performer on stage and show off your moves. (Oh yeah, this is best done when it's just you and the dog in the room. Your dog always thinks you are amazing.)<br />
Classical music with slow smooth ballet moves is another option, if your taste runs more to the yoga style of dancing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM5EnCVB229ZaSvLpuk8yr8aEWtn3FjATR6LQaYZL0zcqa1KxA0ELGKQUhk0bzmqOGrU5Fgv9jjzJwQACar3y1gFDTHNLIwnqcfruiamacXZOpkxLiwr2z_PglzbHTN713AHmn0WkTTqQ/s1600/ballet_dancer_wheel.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="280" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM5EnCVB229ZaSvLpuk8yr8aEWtn3FjATR6LQaYZL0zcqa1KxA0ELGKQUhk0bzmqOGrU5Fgv9jjzJwQACar3y1gFDTHNLIwnqcfruiamacXZOpkxLiwr2z_PglzbHTN713AHmn0WkTTqQ/s320/ballet_dancer_wheel.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And then there are some days when nothing has gone as planned. Deadlines are shuffled, paperwork gets lost, the car breaks down and the universe is totally conspiring against us.<br />
Then, a mellow walk--or even a brisk jog--is just not going to cut it.<br />
It is either eat our weight in chocolate (or in my case corn chips) or put on the rock 'n' roll and DANCE, DANCE, DANCE.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-Kiyoi24lYpTfT4AXh4URWIz_Uxm4dRgFDQCdUEwqlUUJNgAuky4-jgpE6h4FUDJcarbBnLsswRQTNDGya0pB7dyJqEMZqnwtTtys4TnV9PKRmFVlIc6bIFhS5dMADWS8qPjLRf7B-gQ/s1600/dance1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-Kiyoi24lYpTfT4AXh4URWIz_Uxm4dRgFDQCdUEwqlUUJNgAuky4-jgpE6h4FUDJcarbBnLsswRQTNDGya0pB7dyJqEMZqnwtTtys4TnV9PKRmFVlIc6bIFhS5dMADWS8qPjLRf7B-gQ/s320/dance1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Anyway, I think you get my drift. Summer is here, we are stiff as boards and it's gonna take some extra action to get our abs, back and shoulders back in the groove.<br />
<br />
Which brings us to: What do dancers eat?<br />
Welp, a little <a href="http://www.dancemagazine.com/issues/March-2006/Eating-and-Drinking-for-Energy">research</a> found that they are big on liquid meals, like smoothies.<br />
Dancers always need more fluids and smoothies are healthy, portable and quick to digest. Works for me.<br />
In that vein here's a tasty, super-easy smoothie recipe I adapted -- with milk for protein and plenty of sweetness without sugar.<br />
<br />
<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: orange;">Sweet Dancer's Smoothie </span></b><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: yellow;">1 frozen banana</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: yellow;">1 cup of orange juice (fresh squeezed if possible) </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: yellow;">1/2 orange peeled</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: yellow;">1/2 cup nonfat yogurt or 3/4 cup nonfat milk</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: yellow;">1 tsp vanilla extract</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: yellow;">Blend everything with ice.</span><br />
<br />
Swing those hips -- and enjoy!<br />

I know I generally focus on wine, but I've been feeling the urge to branch out. And here in wine country we are surrounded by brewpubs and breweries. So I went back to my (college) roots and asked my buddies to bring me to speed with Craft Beer, which by the way, is a great way to meet outspoken, clever people (my favorite).<br />
<br />
Here are some beer-makers with stories that I uncovered, both in my backyard and across the country.<br />

Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego.<br />
I strongly recommend you visit this place, because they make a killer Manhattan in the downstairs bar. Plus they have done an impressive job in bringing the grand dame back to a new modern life -- despite the wear and tear from the sea air.<br />

Okay admit it, sometimes we work night and day. Big project, big deadline. We all know the drill. That's the time when one of my all-time favorite meals comes in handy--good, ole Breakfast For Dinner. Because, after all, who says if it's the beginning or end of the day when the hours are all running together as we toil at our desks.<br />
I got the Breakfast-For-Dinner bug in Europe, with those midnight suppers in the moonlight at the corner cafe. Way more romantic than foraging through the fridge for a few eggs because, really, who had time to go to the market?<br />
But the BFD routine works either way -- Deadline Day or moonlight supper. For me, the meal usually means eggs and whatever veggies, onions, beans, potatoes etc. that I can scrounge up. I cook them in a little olive oil and roll 'em up in a wheat tortilla. Maybe salsa or chutney on top, if I can find it.<br />
<br />
But what wine to drink with our eggs? Because gawd knows, we deserve a glass or two after the crazy hours we're putting in. My fave is a sparkling white or rose from a local winery. I've also heard that Barbera, a light red, works very well.<br />
And the best part of the BFD habit is yet to come. Put on your sweater, take the last swallow of wine and go out for a stroll under the stars before calling it a night. Loosen your knotted shoulders as you look upward. Even deadlines can't steal the stars from us.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVuVMUgvIHv46rycBfGv6hI3z_6Sh1QdN8HTXjM7Osihh67yrOr_GbQupZR-UtX7p9AeLHFbiKNQ5OuL4GnvunlphZkldPXzm1wg88wet1MhzJaT2WM10EDRajSnCCFSNjB5-7Y_XD05E/s1600/winter-squash-types--m.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVuVMUgvIHv46rycBfGv6hI3z_6Sh1QdN8HTXjM7Osihh67yrOr_GbQupZR-UtX7p9AeLHFbiKNQ5OuL4GnvunlphZkldPXzm1wg88wet1MhzJaT2WM10EDRajSnCCFSNjB5-7Y_XD05E/s1600/winter-squash-types--m.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
So there is this new interesting idea afoot. It is a way to order food -- such as winter squash -- from local farmers and then have it delivered weekly to the place were we are working (or working out).<br />
Farmigo is trying to bring this to Northern California and New York City.<br />
In the south, Silo is doing it in South Carolina.<br />
I think it has promise--since there is less waste and transport, it seems more convenient and less costly for farmers as well as us buyers.<br />
My local pals and I already swap fresh veggies/fruit that we grow during harvest-time when we meet for Wednesday coffee. This would open that up to our local farmers, and bring a lot more variety into the mix.<br />
I wonder if other folks will join up. Would you? If the idea grabs your fancy, get more info at<br />
<a href="http://www.farmigo.com/about">Farmigo</a> and at <a href="http://www.silo-beaufort.com/?select_market=1">SILO</a>. For an inside look, Farmigo also has a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Farmigo">friendly Facebook</a> page.<br />
<br />
In the meantime, winter squash are great for post-holiday meals and to heat the kitchen. Here's a simple way to do 'em. It uses the fresh rosemary that grows like a weed around here.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: orange;">Rosemary Roasted Squash</span> </div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #ffe599;">1. Peel and cube one large butternut squash or 2 smaller squash.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #ffe599;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #ffe599;">2. Mix cubes with 2 cloves of minced garlic, 2 springs of chopped fresh rosemary, 2 Tablespoons of olive oil. Plus a sprinkle of back pepper.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #ffe599;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #ffe599;">3. Bake in a preheated oven at 400 degrees for about 50 minutes until squash is caramelized and light brown.</span><br />
<br />
Enjoy with a nice Pinot Noir and Roasted Chicken or Pork.<br />
You're welcome.<br />

While it's dim outside and rain is dripping all afternoon, it's easy to get bummed out about the cold.<br />
But this isn't really cold, not even close. I have to keep telling myself that.<br />
Here's some pictures to remind us all of what cold really is. And to point out -- once again -- that cold is beautiful and that it is a big reason I love to go skiing. Real cold is actually amazing to someone who grew up in the dry valleys of Southern California.<br />
So please join me: Let's enjoy these pictures, then go make some soup. And maybe have a little Port before bed.<br />
Cheers, Joan<br />

Local garden tomatoes and squash, local bread and trees full of oranges are everywhere. But how about the rest of the year? How big of a deal is local food, really?<br />
Turns out it is a really big deal, even after your favorite farmers markets have shut down for the winter. Fresh local food has gone mainstream year round. Yep, we locavores are no longer weirdos. (foodies can still be kinda ridiculous, what with the one-asparagus-on-a-plate for $10 thing) Here's <a href="http://www.cnbc.com/id/49101716/As_Americans_Rush_to_Fresh_Food_Supermarket_Chains_Follow">a bunch of stats</a> proving how local has grown. <br />
<br />
Like you perhaps, I fall in love with a local produce market in every town I visit--beautiful food and good prices. But the granddaddy has to be Wegmans Markets in the East, partly because it is in places where the alternative is Walmart. Plus it snows there a lot, so forget winter gardens. Lately I learned that Wegmans even has its own research farm, now open to the public.This is a chain that is trying to teach customers raised on pizza, buffalo wings and donuts how to grill veggies and try whole gains. I've got to give them credit. Curious? Here's the <a href="http://www.cnbc.com/id/49101716/As_Americans_Rush_to_Fresh_Food_Supermarket_Chains_Follow">deal on Wegmans</a>.<br />
<br />
Now, go make yourself a Harvest snack:<br />
A slab of sourdough brushed with herb- flavored olive oil. Add a slice of newly picked tomato and basil leaves. Finish your computer work and go sit on the porch. Add wine.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKAQTD7ExluJIcRDas-DmSNMtVQh9KnbrjI5agPzLqsCX5mMDfAjv9xVjhskRiSDxImqkMTyqQLqgOqswuarHtSABZPatCNPwsWo8JSPsoBozJKpuf4_1L2je6H_Wd543xoNofvFhCU6M/s1600/august-tomato-sandwich.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKAQTD7ExluJIcRDas-DmSNMtVQh9KnbrjI5agPzLqsCX5mMDfAjv9xVjhskRiSDxImqkMTyqQLqgOqswuarHtSABZPatCNPwsWo8JSPsoBozJKpuf4_1L2je6H_Wd543xoNofvFhCU6M/s320/august-tomato-sandwich.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Smile, sip and enjoy.<br />
<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">You probably know there are a lot of tantalizing TV ads for junky food, but this stat hit me over the head: </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">A 2,000 calorie diet of foods advertised on TV would contain 25 times the recommended daily servings of sugar and 20 times the recommended servings of fat.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Eating just one of the advertised food items would give you at least 2.5 times the recommended servings of sugar and fat for the entire day. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">So says the American Dietetic Association Journal, as reported in Adweek.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Holy Guacamole!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">So I guess I'll stick with movies and my (ad-free) Netflix offerings. Who needs the unhealthy persuasion?</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTvdzkxAW2vqHWM5H6P5vu-KVMwyks3D2SC1W4tzgtRSZTZUN0SFSl3h_uqzjt2mNH8YURQVQjRmxjwxwEa9O_xv6Uou3onPEVIZSSY-l3fS2RP5fhuqtSl4z41vg17YE3m8HTGpgYuKE/s1600/sangria.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="233" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTvdzkxAW2vqHWM5H6P5vu-KVMwyks3D2SC1W4tzgtRSZTZUN0SFSl3h_uqzjt2mNH8YURQVQjRmxjwxwEa9O_xv6Uou3onPEVIZSSY-l3fS2RP5fhuqtSl4z41vg17YE3m8HTGpgYuKE/s320/sangria.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">On the other side of the coin, what food and drink do you think we regularly search for on Google during the summer? Well it's not burgers and pizza, according to </span><a href="http://www.adweek.com/news/technology/outdoor-life-142474"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Adweek</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">. Google says the most popular searches are for chicken, salmon, margaritas and sangria. Yes, yes, yes, and YES.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Well, everybody around here craves margaritas, (check out the famous </span><a href="http://www.sonomanews.com/Sonoma-Magazine/Summer-2012/Searching-for-the-perfect-margarita/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Margarita Quest</span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">). But poor Sangria is often forgotten when the menu is made. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">So, to save you a search, here's a great Sangria recipe to serve with that spicy guacamole, grilled chicken and poached salmon. You can make margaritas at the next BBQ.</span><br />

What a great development! </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Of course, cycling each day also keeps all our joints working and is easy aerobic exercise, as well as being green and cheap. Really, what is there not to like?</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">And now I can pick out cool togs that match my (neon green) bike and make a fashion statement as I pedal to the post office. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Note to self: black seems like a good basic look for my bike, with contrasting casual brights. Stay away from pastels.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">My inspiration comes from the new book "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Cycle-Chic-Mikael-Colville-Andersen/dp/0500516103">Cycle Chic</a>" by Mikel Colville-Anderson. Lots of pictures of sexy folks wearing interesting clothes as they cycle in cities around the world. Another note: riding in heels is more comfortable than walking in heels. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Mikel also has a blog filled with fun tidbits, (here's a post about <a href="http://www.copenhagencyclechic.com/2009/06/cycling-in-skirts-and-dresses-cycle.html">cycling in skirts and dresses</a>) but the book is the best way to get immersed in his vision. Happy riding everyone.</span><br />

And not every food-and-wine pairing is simple. Sure, folks like to say to match up any food and wine that you like. Yes, red wines can be fine with fish. But sometimes it can get tricky. Especially if you like somewhat exotic dishes, and are getting a little tired of cheese.<br />
So, in the interest of harmony, here's some advice from the experts and my own experience for those more complicated marriages.<br />
<br />
Vinegar-based dishes -- German or New York Riesling<br />
Yogurt-based dips -- Dry white or rose, Greek Retsina<br />
Spicy chili -- Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Merlot<br />
Gingery soup -- Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurtztraminer <br />
<br />
And any discoveries you've made about hard-to-pair healthy food, please share.<br />
Cheers, Joan<br />

That way I can venture out and still enjoy the various vintages that cross my path. But I admit to a few favorites -- both wines and winemakers. Take Vince Tofanelli (pictured here) and his Zinfandel, for instance. It's killer. Vince advises us to pair it with any tomato-based dish. Also a slice of home-made chocolate cake. Wow.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Tofanelli is a tiny Napa winery with really old Italian grapevines.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Wines cost about $35 and you have to <a href="http://www.tofanelliwine.com/TofanelliWine/Order_Wine.html">order</a> them. So they are a special treat -- but without a trace of snob appeal. I have no problem storing them right next to my inexpensive red table wine from the winery down the street. All enjoyed in good fun.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Cheers.</span><br />

Here's a good one from my nephew Tony Valls, a former city kid who lives in the Northern California wilderness with his wife Mary, their three daughters and a bunch of animals. A creative bunch -- their latest project is making soothing soap with the milk of their female goats. Yes, goats.<br />
<br />
Tony's tale about their boy goat:<br />
<br />
<div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">"Levi is a curious goat. Levi has been watching, with interest, our dogs appearing and disappearing through our doggie door into the house. He has tried pushing the door with his head, but to the side of the doggie door itself so he was lightly butting the door. I figured it was his poor depth perception had no worries of him getting into the house.</span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small;">Gidget, our golden retriever, adopted Levi has her little brother. Gidget thought Levi should be allowed in the house, so she gave him a little help. She was standing halfway through the doggie and trying to get Levi to come through....After some trial and error, it worked. Gidget was so happy, so proud that Levi made it into the house. Levi was also happy to be in the house. He greeted everyone, checked the place out and was put back outside through the front door. Levi then trotted around the front porch to the side of the house, went through the doggie door and happily greeted everyone again...Now I need a solution to keep the goat out and still let the dogs use the doggie door."</span></div>
